The Kansas City Chiefs began their offseason conditioning program Monday Jihad Ward Color Rush Jersey , although the amount of work amounted to meetings and some informal, players-only time on the practice field.
Patrick Mahomes II has been doing all of that for months.
The second-year quarterback has assumed the starting role following the offseason trade of Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins, and he has embraced it with aplomb.
Mahomes had no problem summoning older, more experienced teammates for impromptu workouts at local high schools, and figures he threw passes to every running back, tight end and wide receiver on the roster at least once.
"There were great high schools around where I talked to the coaches and they let us use their fields," he said, "and I'd have four or five guys a day. They'd come out there and the good thing I have with my teammates is they want to work to get better, so it was easy to get them out there."
Most guys dropped in for a couple of workouts when they were in town for other business, though a few 鈥?such as star tight end Travis Kelce 鈥?spent the majority of his offseason in Kansas City.
"He just took control out there on the first day," Kelce said of his new QB. "That was the biggest thing Deion Sanders 49ers Jersey , seeing he does have control of the room at a young age. He's not shy taking the lead."
Most quarterbacks around the league do similar offseason workouts with teammates, especially when there are new pieces in place. It takes time to establish the chemistry and timing required to run the modern spread offense, especially a system as complex and diverse as the one run by Andy Reid.
What makes Mahomes unique is precisely what Kelce said: His age. Mahomes won't turn 23 until mid-September, shortly after the season starts, making him one of the youngest players on the team.
That must be balanced by the fact that he also plays the most important position.
Yet it's not as if Mahomes is a rookie being asked to resurrect a floundering franchise. After he was chosen 10th overall he got to spend last season learning under Smith, and then dazzled in a Week 17 start at Denver when the Chiefs already had locked up their playoff seed.
Now he steps under center for the two-time defending AFC West champions, and with more talent around him than any Chiefs quarterback in recent history. He has the reigning NFL rushing leader in Kareem Hunt, Kelce, and a wide receiver group headlined by speedster Tyreek Hill that now includes downfield threat Sammy Watkins.
"He can throw the ball," Watkins said with a grin. "He led the whole process when we were running routes (Monday). He's going to be a great leader. Caught a couple balls, dropped a couple too Cheap Kevin Hogan Jersey , just by his arm strength. But it's going to be a fun time. I can't wait to master this offense."
The biggest challenge Mahomes could face is making sure everybody gets their touches.
In other words, making sure everybody stays happy.
But as numerous players filed through the Chiefs' practice facility on Monday, those with a vested interest in getting their hands on the ball said that won't be a problem. Kelce, Watkins and the rest of them gushed about the selflessness that exists in their new-look locker room.
"Guys don't have egos. I've met them, got to work with them," said wide receiver Chris Conley, who is coming back from a ruptured Achilles tendon. "I think we'll have great comraderies, and obviously there's one ball to go around, but we're going to make this offense run and shake."
The defense is another matter entirely.
There are questions just about everywhere after the release of veteran linebackers Derrick Johnson and Tamba Hali, the trade of cornerback Marcus Peters and the release of safety Ron Parker.
Some of the spots have been shored up through free agency, including the signing of linebacker Anthony Hitchens Authentic Sebastian Janikowski Jersey , and the Chiefs are expected to fill others through next week's draft.
In the meantime, the guys already on the team have started their offseason work in earnest.
Even if a few of them have been at it for a while.
The Los Angeles Angels open a 10-game road trip Monday afternoon with a makeup game against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium.
The game was originally rained out on April 15.
The Angels will continue east afterward and begin a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night.
The Royals (25-54) have lost 11 of 12 and 17 of 19.
The Angels (41-37) have lost two straight and trail the Seattle Mariners by six games for the second wild card from the American League.
Los Angeles left-hander Tyler Skaggs is scheduled to start on the mound after he was scratched Thursday against the visiting Toronto Blue Jays because of a sore hamstring.
Skaggs (6-4, 2.81 ERA) should have good memories of Kansas City. He threw seven shutout innings in each of his two career appearances against the Royals, both on their home field.
He allowed four hits and matched his career high with nine strikeouts on April 16, 2017, but was matched by Royals starter Ian Kennedy and Kansas City eventually scored a run in the bottom of the ninth to win 1-0.
Skaggs made his first career start in Kansas City in July 2016, which also marked his first major-league game back from Tommy John surgery performed nearly two years earlier. He allowed three hits in the 13-0 win.
The Angels are 6-0 against the Royals this season, but Skaggs has not appeared in any of those games. He last pitched July 15 at the Oakland A’s and did not allow an earned run in seven innings of an 8-4 win.
Skaggs is 3-0 in June with a 0.45 ERA, perhaps his best stretch since undergoing elbow surgery in August 2014.
“With Tyler, we’ve seen a constant growth in confidence,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia told the Los Angeles Times. “This guy’s worked so hard to get back to where he was and even a little above that now.”
Kansas City starter Jakob Junis (5-8 Cheap Billy Price Jersey , 4.43) has been trending in the opposite direction, losing his past five starts.
He began the season by blanking the Detroit Tigers for seven innings in a 1-0 win on April 3 and doing the same six days later in a 1-0 win over the Seattle Mariners.
Junis then faced the Angels and was knocked out after allowing four runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings of a 5-3 loss in Kansas City, giving up home runs to Luis Valbuena, Justin Upton and Mike Trout.
Junis had allowed 19 home runs entering Sunday, tied for the major-league lead with Bartolo Colon.
“It’s definitely been a struggle for me,” he told reporters after his latest start. “I’ve given up a lot of home runs this year, so I’m very conscious of that. I’m trying to keep it in the ballpark, because when I do, that’s when I have success.”
Junis struggled even worse in his only other appearance against the Angels last June, giving up five runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings of a 9-0 loss in Anaheim.
